1913 was the inaugural year for the Buffalo Nickel.
The type 1 reverse is distinguished by the “Five Cents” below a raised mound. This caused excessive wear to the text and resulted in a redesign.
Designed by James Earle Fraser the obverse features the profile of a Native American, meanwhile the reverse features the iconic bison, Black Diamond.
